Assisting owner builders with diy electrical installations, expert consulting, workmanship supervision

electrical installation assistance, consulting, inspection services Many owner-builders choose to go the DIY electrical installations route -- and elect not to employ the full services of a registered contractor or licensed electrician. What does the code say diy electrical installations? You may also choose to use a less skilled single-phase wireman instead of an installation electrician. You want to save money without sacrificing safety.

I consult informally, although I cannot take legal responsibility for work done by others unless the work is under my personal supervision, but will provide advice based on my best professional judgment.

If you are using an unqualified or unlicensed person, we need to clear up some things right from the beginning.

By working with me does not mean renting my license --that’s illegal. It also means that you cannot be fully in charge of your own job; because my name is on the permit. I am responsible for how it is done and making sure that the installation is fully compliant in terms of the SANS 10142 Act.

By working with me, you can learn a lot, but it's not about practicing how to be your own electrician -- or expect me to supervise and manage work done by someone who hardly knows the basics. It takes a long time to gain the skills and knowledge required to be a competent electrician.

Finally, a diy electrical installation does not mean using the cheapest materials available, installed in the quickest and dirtiest manner possible.

How it works.

For a set fee, I will meet and work with the person doing the job and help set things up so that you are able to do the bulk of the work (chasing, conduits, cable laying, etc) -- but remember that this will depend largely on the level of skill and knowledge of the person doing the job.

I will give you a firm price for the number of supervision and inspections that I will determine are necessary. If the person responsible for the job is unable to do the work, and my time is consequently extended, then I will let you know and we’ll re-evaluate the price accordingly.

Whenever you work with me, you must take full responsibility for yourself in terms of personal safety issues, tool use, protective gear and anything else that might affect your safety.
