Generators FAQ,
everything you need to know about home generators

Q: Can I run a PC from a portable generator?
Yes, but remember that you should always protect computers and other sensitive electronic equipment with a surge protection device, regardless whether you are using a generator or not. These are relatively inexpensive and easily available from most PC stores. You can get yours here.

Having said that, if the generator is sized correctly and you don't overload it, (and you don't let it run out of fuel) the output will typically be no worse than your mains electricity supply. If you can, buy a generator with built-in AVR (voltage regulator)

Q: Can I have an automatic "changeover" switch rather than the manual?
If you are using a "portable", you should use a manual "changeover" switch. However automated changeover switches are becoming popular with diesel generators. Still, they are better suited for commercial applications.

Q: What type of fuel should I use?
In South Africa most smaller generators use normal petrol or diesel. These require the lowest initial capital outlay and are recommended in residential applications where only occasional use is needed. Bear in mind that petrol machines are typically noisier than diesel.

The next question is; should you spend the extra money on a larger generator, or make do with a portable by powering only critical circuits. In a typical home, a portable is sufficient.

Q: What about the noise factor?
Noise is a factor, especially if you live in close proximity to your neighbours. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a totally silent generator. After all, it is an engine that is running and producing electrical power. However, there is a huge difference in noise levels between a 75db generator to a 60db one.

A typical air-cooled 4-stroke 5-8kW, for example, should not exceed 75db's 7 meters. That’s like a neighbour hearing your regular vacuum cleaner at a distance. See noise levels.

What Are Watts?
A watt measures the amount of energy an appliance uses per second.
A kilowatt is 1000 watts.
Watts = Amps x Volts

For simplicity’s sake 1000 Watts = 1kVA (actually it's 1.2kVA)

Generators are rated by two types of wattages:

1. Rated Watts
Rated (or run) watts are the amount of watts your appliance needs to keep it running. For example, a refrigerator typically needs 500 watts to run.

2. Start-up Watts
Surge (or starting) watts are the amount of watts your appliance needs to start its motor. For example, it can take up to 1500 watts just to get your refrigerator's motor and compressor started. Remember, when sizing a generator, you need to add up the start-up watts.
