"In my opinion, generators are too expensive, noisy and environmentally unfriendly for normal home use"
The generator business seems to becoming crowded with opportunists cashing in on the emotive subject of power outages. But the fact is that in spite of the problems (and the hype) things may not be quite as bad as they seem.
Chances are that the lights will not go out for more 3 hours a day. Therefore as a homeowner you need to justify the spending R20 000 plus just for a relatively small 5kva generator.
As you’ve gathered, I’m no big fan of home generators unless of course you run a business from home. I think that there are cheaper and more effective alternatives to noisy and gasoline hungry generators.
But before writing off generators altogether.
I think that there is merit in a mini-generator like the one in the picture. The advantages are:
• it has a higher output than your typical battery inverter and, unlike battery inverters it keeps you powered for as long as you need
• it costs the same or less
• it is relatively silent at under 60db’s – meaning that you can use it in close proximity with other homes without irritating your neighbours
• unlike 2 to 3 litres an hour - this one uses about a litre
• it can easily installed without calling an electrician and is completely portable
If you combine this little machine with say, a gas cooker and a couple of oil lamps, you should have no problem cruising through a 3-hour power outage.
