Home generatorsSouth African homeowners haven’t given home generators much thought -- until mid 2007 that is, when we began to experience more frequent power disruptions due to, what Eskom say, is insufficient power capacity.
Power blackouts (load shedding) is becoming endemic in South Africa, and if homes and businesses don't reduce consumption (which is unlikely to happen), power cuts are set to continue well beyond 2012.
Having said that, I have to say that I'm not a big fan of home generators per se', unless it's a small model like the SINEMASTER 2600 or you run a business from home. This is where a standby generator can save your business. Unlike battery powered inverters and solar panels, they can keep all your essential lights, machines, computers and appliances powered for as long as you need.
But standby generators have their disadvantages too and there are safety issues to consider.
