Generator noise laws?

Home generators

South African homeowners haven’t given home generators much thought -- until mid 2007 that is, when we began to experience more frequent power disruptions due to, what Eskom say, is insufficient power capacity.

Power blackouts (load shedding) is becoming endemic in South Africa, and if homes and businesses don't reduce consumption (which is unlikely to happen), power cuts are set to continue well beyond 2012.

Having said that, I have to say that I'm not a big fan of home generators per se', unless it's a small model like the SINEMASTER 2600 or you run a business from home. This is where a standby generator can save your business. Unlike battery powered inverters and solar panels, they can keep all your essential lights, machines, computers and appliances powered for as long as you need.

But standby generators have their disadvantages too and there are safety issues to consider. Click to learn more about the safety precautions associated with generators.

Running a business from home?
This is a typical high quality machine, under 70db's, 5kVA, 230 volt, single phase. It comes with built-in AVR (voltage regulator), electric start, low oil alert and a 4-stroke diesel or petrol engine. @ around R14 000,00, excluding the changeover switch and installation.

If you've bought a "portable" generator in anticipation of further power disruptions, do not connect the generator to the electrical installation. This is extremely dangerous! You'll need to consult a qualified electrician that understands the principles of a generator and have a "changeover" switch installed so that you can safely isolate the main utility supply from the generator power.
