Trivia

Meaningful tips for slashing your electricity consumption by 40-50%

In a typical South African home, water heaters (geysers), heating and air conditioning use up more electricity than anything else – in fact combined, it accounts for around 60% of your total electricity bill. If you're serious about saving electricity, address your geyser, air conditioning and heating usage first, since that's what uses the most electricity.

Don’t worry about whether you should boil a cup of water in an electric kettle or in the microwave, or whether you should be walking around in semi-darkness because you’ve decided to switch off half your lights rather than keeping them on to save electricity. Such trivia will not make any significant impact on your electrical bill, so it’s not worth the trouble. With that in mind, you'll want to address the big energy wasters first – and there are two that you'll need to chop down to size;

1. Water heaters (geysers)

2. Air conditioners in summer and heaters in winter

The chart below is a ballpark indicator of how much the average South African home uses on electricity. Just look at the % of what the geyser and heating costs compared to the rest.

Saving electricity doesn't just put money in your pocket, it also helps the environment.

Every time you plug something into the wall, it seems clean enough -- The problem is that you don't see or smell any pollution, like you do with your car. But the pollution is there -- it just happens at the power plant. Most of the electricity generated in South Africa is by burning coal --which means that every time you turn on the lights, you help create a little more pollution. Spare a thought to this cause now and again!
