Generator noise levels
Standby generators, the only power outage backup plan for a business
Standby generators, especially stand-alone units, are epensive, thus are used mainly for commercial and industrial purposes.
BUT -- if you can't afford a standby, don't despair, you could opt for a portable generator and with some ingenuity, power critical circuits only and thus ride out a power outage with relative ease. This is a good option for a retail business or small office.
If you lack the technical expertise, you'll need to hire a qualified electrician to guide you in sizing the generator correctly. Remember that sizing your generator correctly is critical. Most generator merchants can refer you to a qualified installer to help you size it and install the mandatory changeover switch
In a standby, with automatic changeover switch, the critical factor is to work out the minimum watts, referred to as running Watts, but you'll also need to take cognicance of the start-up wattage. This is particularly important because in a commercial application, the generator will not be monitored by you in the same way you would monitor portable home generator.
Start-up and running Watts -- what's that?
You'll need to take into account that the power is constantly fluctuating. The wattage can change from one minute to another -- when a AC compressor starts, or the fridge compressor, or the geyser kicks on. In reality, things around the office or at home don’t run simultaneously.
